Abstract

Purpose

Over nearly six decades in prison, therapeutic communities (TCs) have waxed and waned in California. While there have been dramatic and demonstrable sucess with some of the most intractable populations in California prisons, the TC model has met substantial challenges, both bureaucratic and political. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a six-decade review of in-prison TCs in California based both on the research literature and from personal experience over 30 years providing both in-prison and community based TCs in California.

Findings

Despite well-documented success reducing the recidivism of violent offenders in California prisons (which is now the bulk of the population), the government has ignored the success of well implemented in-prison TCs, and has implemented a CBT model which has recently been documented to have been ineffective in reducing recidivism. The State is now at a crossroads.

Research limitations/implications

Documented research findings of success do not necessarily result in the implementation of the model.

Practical implications

There is evidence that violent felons are amenable to treatment.

Social implications

Public concern over the return of violent felons from prison can be ameliorated by the evidence of the effectiveness of TC treatment in prison.

Originality/value

There is no other publication which captures the narrative of the TC in California prisons over six decades.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is twofold: to reflect upon what the global therapeutic community (TC) movement has learnt from coronavirus and to consider how TCs will continue to adapt and evolve in a post-pandemic climate.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a viewpoint paper based on the authors’ participation in an international learning event whereby speakers from TCs from around the world spoke about how they adapted their services to overcome adversity.

Findings

The findings are usefully thought out as shelter, creativity, reintegration and employment, technology and roots. Based on the material discussed in the learning event, it would seem that the global TC movement has engaged in a process of looking to the past to move forward by drawing upon founding principles and prescriptions of the TC tradition, rooted in humanistic and indeed humanitarian responses to staff, client and sociocultural needs.

Originality/value

According to the author, this paper is one of the first attempts to capture how TCs from across the globe have responded to the threat of coronavirus.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of theoretical considerations and experimental tests concerning microscaffold fabrication by selective laser melting (SLM). Also described are manufacturing technologies for regular lattice microstructure with the smallest possible pore sizes and fullest possible order of geometric accuracy retained. Process parameters of SLM greatly affect the properties of the fabricated structures not only in regards to their material characteristics but also in their geometric representation accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper discusses technological relationships between different laser micrometallurgy strategies and the accuracy of the manufactured microstructures.

Findings

With technological possibilities evaluated, regular porous structure was created composed of cubic pores with cylindrical struts as their boundaries. Strut diameters are up to 180 μm, and the distance between neighboring strut axes was reduced to 600 μm, which gives a hollow channels clearance of approximately 420 μm.

Originality/value

Presented results show possibilities of manufacturing small high-strength lattice microstructures by SLM using Ti-6Al-7Nb titanium alloy powders for tissue engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

This exploratory study seeks to understand whether an arts event designed with/by/for disabled people (the InterACT Disability Arts Festival in New Zealand) has the potential to create revolutionary futures, defined as those which help determine new paths, make the future less fearsome and allow more positive outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative approach was taken in this study. Interviews were carried out with ten disabled event attendees, two support workers, one family member, four event volunteers, two activity providers and the main event organiser of the 2019 festival. Active participant observation was also used to collect data. Deductive thematic analysis was used to determine themes and subthemes in the material.

Findings

The findings suggest the case study arts event does help to create revolutionary futures for disabled attendees through disrupting the narratives of disability, making sense of lives lived and changing lives yet to be lived.

Research limitations/implications

Limited windows of opportunity were available to interact with attendees, and just 17 in-the-moment interviews were conducted. However, the findings still have value as data saturation was reached. A “revolutionary futures” conceptual framework is presented to understand the nexus between disability worlds and events and thus amplify the benefits for attendees.

Originality/value

Research carried out to date has provided much-needed understanding about the challenges facing disabled people at events, but this study turns this deficit approach around to focus on the opportunities provided by event participation.

The numerical treatment of coupled field interaction problems frequently uses mixed time integration methods. These methods permit different time integration methods (implicit, explicit) and/or different timesteps to be used simultaneously in different parts of the mesh. This paper summarizes the various mixed time integration methods and provides a unified presentation. Computer implementation of the generalized scheme is provided through a 1D linear structural dynamics program (GEMIX). Two common examples illustrate the use of GEMIX program.
